Edgemoor Neighborhood Pilot Project - Single-Stream Curbside Recycling

The Edgemoor neighborhood in Bellingham was selected by the City of Bellingham and Sanitary Service Company (SSC) for a six (6) month pilot project to evaluate single-stream (co-mingled) curbside recycling.

This neighborhood was selected as it is the furthest from Lautenbach Recycling in Ferndale where SSC delivers recyclables collected in Bellingham, offering the greatest reduction in truck miles (emissions) if a switch were to be made to single-stream (co-mingled) curbside recycling service. The neighborhood also offers street front pick-up and Friday collection works best for our route schedule.

This pilot project will analyze potential efficiencies and evaluate changes in the amount of material collected, truck emissions, labor costs, safety, and litter from wind blow. We will also evaluate changes in contamination levels of recycling materials collected.

What's Next?

A 90 gal, green, wheeled Toter® with a blue lid will be delivered to your home the weekend of April 23-24, 2022. Your last stack three recycling bin curbside pick-up will be Fri., April 22, 2022. Your first single-stream curbside recycling pick-up using the 90-gal Toter® will be Fri., May 6, 2022 and every-other-Friday thereafter until the end of the pilot.

Recycling collection during this pilot project will be every-other-week (EOW) due to the additional capacity of the 90-gal Toter®. Do not use stack three recycling bins during this pilot project.

Tips for using your 90-gal recycling Toter®:

  1. Place all recyclables in your recycling Toter® that you would otherwise have placed in your stack of three recycling bins. Cardboard should be placed IN the recycling Toter®.
  2. Place the recycling Toter® out the night before collection with the handle toward the house. Keep at least 3 feet of clear space around all sides.
  3. For the duration of this pilot project, additional recyclable items that are usually set next to your recycling bins for pick-up, including aerosol cans, vehicle/SLA batteries, cords/wiring, and scrap metal, will be accepted at our Bellingham Drop Box Facility & Recycling Center. Do not set out for curbside recycling. Recycle used motor oil at Disposal of Toxics Facility.
