Bellingham, WA - 7/19/2010. Recycling commodity rates for 2010 have been filed with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) and are effective July 1, 2010.
In 2009, market prices for recyclables decreased from 2008 prices, resulting in us being charged more than what it costs to process the materials. The 2009 charge of $0.15 per month will increase for 2010 to a charge of $.58 per month. For residential customers billed every three months, this will show as a recycling charge of $1.74 ($0.58 x 3 months). This rate change applies only to customers in unincorporated Whatcom County. Rates remain the same for all other customers, including those in Bellingham and Ferndale.
Sanitary Service Company, Inc. (SSC) provides your residence with recycling collection services. You pay us to collect your recyclables, such as newspapers, bottles and cans. These materials are sold and the value we receive (if any) from the sale of these materials is applied to your collection bill in the form of a recycling credit or recycling charge. The recycling credit or recycling charge is determined by market prices for recyclables from the previous year. It is reviewed and adjusted annually by the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC). Market prices for recyclables go up and down just like prices for other commodities, such as lumber and oil.
