Ask SSC Q. Can cardboard rollers that are inside toilet paper and paper towel rolls be recycled with scrap paper?

Toilet Paper

A: Dear Clarissa,

Yes. paper tubes from toilet paper, paper towels, aluminum foil, gift wrap, etc. can be recycled along with other scrap papers in your scrap paper recycling bin or Toter. Note: paper towels, facial tissue and other tissue products, tissue paper, parchment and foiled gift wrap are not accepted for recycling as scrap paper.

Paper towels, tissues, plates, napkins, tissue paper, parchment

Wax or refrigerator/freezer cartons
(ex. milk, juice or frozen food containers)

Paperboard cartons (ex. cereal boxes, mac ‘n cheese, shoe boxes, gift boxes), paper tubes, rolls

Discard liners/packing material. Flatten boxes.

Thermal receipts (waxy), fax paper (thermal), carbon paper

Staples, paper clips and file folder clips OK

Paper with foil or plastic (ex. foil gift wrap, postal envelopes (TYVEK)

Drivers cannot take recyclables in plastic bags for safety reasons – use a sturdy paper sack, small plastic tub or cardboard box no larger than the standard curbside recycling bin for extras.
