Bellingham, WA. – (April 8, 2005) Sanitary Service Company, Inc. (SSC) announced today it is expanding its yardwaste recycling program under the name Food Plus! Recycling.

Beginning June 1, residential customers will be able to use their yardwaste toters to recycle all food scraps, including meat and dairy products, and food-soiled papers, such as pizza boxes and milk cartons. Cost for the expanded service will remain unchanged at $8/month for a 60-gallon toter and every-other-week collection. The Food Plus! Recycling service is also available to commercial customers at a cost of $10.75/per toter per pick-up. Commercial service includes all pre and post-consumer generated food scraps, food-soiled papers and yardwaste.

"This is the logical next step for our award-winning recycling program,” said Rodd Pemble, SSC Recycling Manager. “With state-of-the-art composting technology available at Green Earth Technologies in Lynden, and help from officials in Bellingham, Ferndale and at the Whatcom County Health Department, we are poised to reach record recycling levels in Whatcom County with the Food Plus! Program.”

According to Pemble, food scraps and food-soiled papers make up a good part of what is left in the garbage after recycling of papers, cans and glass. Pemble said the service will be available to all residents and businesses in Bellingham, Ferndale, Birch Bay and parts of unincorporated Whatcom County. “We are looking at expanding to other parts of our service area and in the coming months,” said Pemble. The company will also deliver a 2 gallon, kitchen pail for a nominal charge.
For more information about the Food Plus! Recycling service, customers can call 734-3490.
