Ask SSC How do I dispose of old license plates?

License Plate

Q: I moved from out of state and my husband and I have our old license plates to recycle. If we invalidate the stickers and bend them so they can't be used, can we then stick them in the recycling bins at our house?

Dear Lisa,

We accept old license plates, except those listed below, for recycling in both our curbside recycling program and at any of our three area recycling centers. To prepare old plates for recycling:

  • Remove or invalidate the month and year tabs then bend the plates so they can’t be used on another vehicle. Recycle with other bottles, cans and plastic containers.

We can not accept the following types of license plates. Please return to a vehicle licensing office. For more info click here.

  • Commercial vehicle plates (gross weight over 12,000 pounds)
  • Personalized plates
  • Baseball stadium plates
  • Horseless carriage plates
  • Amateur radio operator (HAM) plates
  • Medal of Honor plates
  • Pearl Harbor survivor plates
  • Gold Star parent plates
