New rates in effect July 1 for unincorporated Whatcom County customers

2012-06-28-

Bellingham, WA – The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC) has approved a garbage rate increase of approximately 1% for all SSC residential and commercial customers in unincorporated Whatcom County.

The increase is a direct pass through covering an increase in disposal fees being charged at both Recomp and RDS transfer stations. A portion of their increase is directly attributable to an increase in the tax imposed by the city of Ferndale on those same fees. SSC will not make any profit from these increased fees for disposal and Ferndale taxes. This is a direct pass through of expense. New rates go into effect July 1. Customers affected by this change will see a notice on their June bill.

Additionally, SSC residential and multifamily recycling commodity rates are decreasing effective July 1 as part of our annual commodity tracker filing. The impact of the tracker is a decrease in the residential recycling commodity rate from a credit of $0.24 to a credit of $0.51 per customer, per month and a decrease in the multi-family recycling commodity rate from a debit of $0.07 to a credit of $0.09 per yard per pickup. This decrease is attributable to an improvement in the value of resalable commodities. For more on the recycling commodity tracker click here. Multi-family customers click here.

The net impact to residential and multifamily customers, garbage increase less commodity decrease, is a decrease in the overall monthly rate. Commercial accounts, with the exception of the aforementioned multi-family customers, will see an increase of approximately 1%.
