SSC Launches Used Bicycle Reuse Program
Sanitary Service Company, Inc. (SSC) has launched a new program to collect used bicycles and donate them to two, local non-profits for reuse.
Bellingham, Washington – (April 20, 2011) Local recycling and solid waste hauler, Sanitary Service Company (SSC), a long-time supporter of community cycling organizations and events, announced the launch of a new recycling initiative to collect used bicycles for reuse by two area non-profits promoting cycling in our community. The Recycle Your Cycle project, which began earlier this year, has already collected more than 30 used bicycles that might otherwise have gone to the landfill or been recycled as scrap metal. Bicycles collected are donated to The Bike Shop and The Hub “Pedal Project”, two non-profit organizations working locally to get more people cycling, while teaching them how to maintain their bikes for safe riding.
Avid cyclist and SSC President Paul Razore said the company prides itself on being a “bicycle-friendly” business. “This program is a win-win if we can help keep salvageable bikes out of the landfill and get them into the hands of kids and local organizations that can repair and reuse them,” Razore said. Matt Velguth, Director of The Bike Shop, said he welcomes any used bicycle donations. “Our organization is dependent on community support and projects like SSC’s Recycle Your Cycle helps us get more kids out cycling.” Kyle Morris, Director at The Hub “Pedal Project” echoed Velguth’s sentiments. “This is a great community program that SSC has set up and we are happy to accept any bicycles they collect. We also accept bicycles for donation at The Hub, but more community drop-off locations and reuse options means more opportunity for bicycles and riders in the community.”
SSC Recycling Manager, Rodd Pemble, is also active in local cycling and regularly rides to work. “The Recycle Your Cycle project was a natural fit for us – combining reuse, recycling and our interest in supporting local cycling initiatives,” said Pemble. Pemble said used bicycles are accepted at no charge during regular business hours at SSC’s Bellingham Recycling Center & Transfer Station at 1001 Roeder Avenue (F&Roeder). Customers should check in at the front for assistance. Donated bicycles must be able to be repaired and ridden - at a minimum. Bicycles beyond repair can be recycled as scrap metal.
