Common Questions and Answers
Where does our garbage go?
Your garbage is delivered to RECOMP of Washington which is located on Slater Road in Ferndale.
What do they do with the garbage?
They load it into railcars and ship it by train to Roosevelt Regional Landfill in Eastern Washington.
Is that landfill almost full?
No. It has a permitted capacity to accept 120 million tons over 40 years.
Does the landfill in Eastern Washington accept garbage from other states and countries?
Yes. They accept garbage from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Canada.
Where do our recyclables go?
Your recyclables are delivered to Northwest Recycling which is located on C Street in Bellingham.
What do they do with our recyclables?
Northwest Recycling processes the materials and ships them off to other businesses located in Washington, Oregon and Canada. Some materials are shipped overseas. These businesses then reuse the materials and make them into new products. For example, scrap paper, newspaper and cardboard are baled and shipped to paper recycling plants that use them to make new paper products such as newsprint, egg cartons, paper towels and cardboard. Aluminum and metal cans are melted and used to make new aluminum cans, foil and metal cans. Plastic bottles are shredded, melted and then made into new plastic containers or building materials like plastic lumber. Glass bottles are melted and used to make new glass bottles or crushed and used for sand blasting or construction fill.
How much garbage do we produce?
Residential customers in Bellingham produce approximately 1,000 tons of garbage per month.
How much do we recycle?
Residential customers in Bellingham recycle between 400 and 500 tons each month. This is a recycling recovery rate of 30-34%. This percent rate is based only on what SSC collects. Recycling your old appliance or taking your yard debris to the City of Bellingham's Clean Green facility for composting adds to the recycling rate.
Does everyone recycle the same materials in Washington?
No. Most curbside recycling programs do not collect motor oil, scrap metal or vehicle batteries like SSC does. Some programs do not collect plastic bottles or only collect one or two different types of bottles. SSC believes Whatcom County and the City of Bellingham collect more types of materials for recycling than any other recycling program in Washington state.
