Q: How do you dispose of smoke alarms?
A: Dear J.,
There are two types of smoke alarms available on the market - ionization and photoelectric. Both contain plastic, electronic circuit boards and in some cases, batteries. Some ionization smoke alarms contain radioactive materials and cannot be recycled. Here’s how to properly dispose of each:
Ionization Smoke Alarm
- Remove the battery. If alkaline, dispose of it in the garbage. If lithium, drop off for recycling at your local electronics store. Some local grocers also have battery recycling containers.
- Carefully remove the plastic cover and recycle it with bottles, cans and plastic containers in your curbside recycling bin.
- Package the remaining alarm and mail it back to the manufacturer who will properly dispose of it. The address of the manufacturer is usually listed in the product warranty or user’s manual.

Q: Where can I recycle a dysfunctional coffeemaker that includes a glass carafe?
A: Dear MaryLynn,
Unfortunately, non-working coffeemakers and other small appliances are not recyclable.
Repair and reuse are best bets for appliances that need fixing or that you no longer want or need.
For repair, look online or in the phone book for local appliance repair shops.
For reuse or donation, local charities and thrift shops may take the working parts like a glass carafe, blender jar, mixer bowl and attachments, etc.
Reminder: Carafes, blender jars, mixing bowls, etc. are all non-recyclable glass - usually Pyrex or ceramic – and not accepted for recycling. Thank you.
For additional questions or more info, please contact us or call (360) 734-3490.

Q: Do you have any tips on how to deal with garbage and recyclables on stormy pick-up days?
A: Dear William,
Our wet and windy days are here! Thank you for your interest in helping prevent wind-blown litter. Here are some collection day tips that will help keep your neighborhood clean!
Toters® (Garbage and FoodPlus!)
- Please bag ALL garbage - especially StyrofoamTM peanuts/packaging and shredded paper - before placing in Toter®. If the wind blows it, at least you won’t have a wind-blown mess!
- If you live in a neighborhood serviced by our automated (sidearm) collection truck…
- Place Toter® at curb with handle toward the house so lid recloses after pick-up.
- Place Toter® with at least six (6) feet of clear space around all sides. Do not place Toter® near other containers, trees/hedges, phone poles, mailboxes or parked cars.
Recycling Bins
If possible, avoid putting bins out on very windy days. Set out at next scheduled pick-up. If setting out, place each recycling bin on the ground with rock or brick on top of items.- BLUE BIN (Cans, Glass & Plastic Containers) - Place heavier items on top (like glass bottles and jars) to prevent lighter plastics from blowing. If stacking, place on ground first.
- RED BIN (NEWSPAPER) - Place newspapers flat in bin with brick or rock on top to prevent blowing. If stacking, place this bin in middle.
- WHITE BIN (Mixed Paper) - Place mixed paper in a paper bag and lay bag sideways in bin so wind can’t get it. If paper is loose in bin, place a rock or brick on top to prevent blowing. If stacking, place this bin on top.
- CARDBOARD - Flatten boxes and put between bins or on ground with a weight on top.
Please mark your address on your Toter® and recycling bins! This will help locate your containers should they blow away. For more info click here. For questions, please contact us ssc@ssc-inc.com or (360) 734-3490.

Q: Hi, What is the proper disposal of “sharps boxes” that contain used syringes? The syringes have a retractable needle feature that happens automatically after use. We send these small sharps boxes home with patients if they are prescribed certain injections at home. We have a variety of opinions here as to what the correct disposal process is at home. I think they should just be sealed up and placed in the garbage. Is that right? Or should patients take them back to a pharmacy or doctor’s office.
A: Dear Robin,
Great question and one that is not always clear to patients and health care professionals. We rely on the Whatcom County Health Department (WCHD) for information about proper disposal of medicines and sharps. Here is what we tell customers:
SHARPS DISPOSAL - (from HOUSEHOLDS)
To safely dispose of used needles, syringes or unused medicines left in syringes (sharps) from your household, please place in a 2-liter soda bottle and seal securely. Label “SHARPS” and discard in the garbage. For printable warning labels click here.
If you are given an empty, official sharps disposal container by your health care provider for your use at home, please use that container until it is full, or you are otherwise finished with it, then seal it according to the manufacturer’s directions and place in the regular garbage for disposal.
For additional information on proper disposal of medicines and sharps click here, contact the WCHD Environmental Health Division at (360) 676-6724 or contact us at www.ssc-inc.com or (360) 734-3490.

Q: Do you accept shredded paper? If so, do you have specific packaging instructions?
A: Dear Chris,
Yes, we accept shredded paper for recycling. Thanks for asking how to prepare it since loose shredded paper can be a litter problem if your recycling bin tips over or it is windy weather.
Please bag all shredded paper in a paper bag, then tape shut with a bit of masking tape to prevent it from blowing. Lay sideways in your recycling bin. Placing a rock, brick or another recycling bin on top will also help prevent wind-blown litter. For more info click here or contact us at (360) 734-3490 or ssc@ssc-inc.com.
SSC also offers confidential data shredding – mobile on-site or drop-off at our Bellingham Recycling Center & Transfer Station located at 1001 Roeder Avenue (corner F & Roeder). For more info click here or contact us at (360) 734-3490 or ssc@ssc-inc.com.

Q: We don’t agree on this in our house – is it okay if we put window envelopes that have the plastic transparent material covering the window in with our paper recycling? What about receipts on waxy paper?
A: Dear Sarah,
Window Envelopes
Window, or glassine, envelopes are acceptable in your scrap paper recycling bin. Modern paper mills have been designed to handle and remove small amounts of contaminants, like the glassine sheet, and other items like staples and bits of debris. As the paper is turned into pulp, screens capture the contaminants and divert them for disposal.Thermal Paper Receipts
Thermal paper receipts (“waxy” receipts) should be discarded with your trash to minimize the release of Bisphenol-A (BPA) into the environment. BPA is a chemical that is coated on this type of paper. For more info on this subject visit Washington Toxics Coalition. Traditional paper receipts can be recycled in your scrap paper recycling bin. For more info click here or contact us at (360) 734-3490 or ssc@ssc-inc.com. -

Q: What do I do if my garbage or recycling collection is delayed or missed due to weather?
A: Dear Bethany,
SSC is committed to providing reliable collection service for all our customers. At times, severe weather and road conditions may delay service(s) for some of our customers. When circumstances such as unsafe roads interrupt safe service, we appreciate customer understanding and cooperation as we operate on emergency scheduling. The information below will be helpful if we cannot collect your home recyclables or garbage on your regular pick-up day. For businesses please visit Weather-Related Service Delays. For more Wet and Windy Weather Collection tips click here.
Residential Customers: Weather-related Collection Schedule Info
- If we cannot collect your garbage and recyclables on your regular collection day we will try the next business day (weather and road conditions permitting).
- If we cannot get back on the next business day, then your recyclables and garbage (including any material missed) will be collected on the next regularly scheduled pick-up day for your neighborhood. This applies to every-other-week and monthly customers. If garbage and recyclables are collected on the next pick-up, no credit will be issued.
If your Toter®(s) or recycling bins are buried or covered in snow, it would help our crews a great deal if you could dig out or uncover them and bring them curbside or alleyside for pick-up. Thank you!
